The Sarasota Millionaires are hit with another team tragedy... On the early morning hours Thursday rookie wide receiver Darian Everett was pronounced dead on the scene of a horrific car accident. Electrical crews were busy replacing a wooden utility pole that was sheered off when Darian Everett's car crashed into it. Everett, 20, was killed and his two passengers were critically injured. One of the electrical workers, who had been there for hours, noted that the force of the collision tore the motor from Everett's vintage 1972 Chevrolet Nova.

Everett had started participating in the teams workout and practices since the start of the new season. "He was humble and respectful never losing his cool or talked back, etc. He had asked me if the #81 jersey had been taken, he wanted to wear that number to represent our head coach Ernest Givins who wore that number during his NFL days," said co owner Bethsaida Williams. "The day before his death he called me twice, and we also met with each other so that I could give him some paperwork. We talked about our preseason game this Saturday and just a bunch of other little football things, I would never had thought that would be the last time I would see or speak with him, I'm heartbroken". The Sarasota Millionaires will continue to keep Darian's friends and family in our prayers.

The Sarasota Millionaires have been struck with tragedy twice before this. On October 24, 2008 CPL Delvis Fernandez was shot and killed as he exited a local convenience store.
And on January 15, 2011 Thomas "TJ" Mills was also tragically shot and killed as he waited outside a different local convenience store. Both suspects in the shootings were caught, tried, and convicted.

The Sarasota Police Department and the Brotherhood of Men mentoring group co-hosted a free community event for children this past Thursday night called The Junior SWAT Challenge. The Junior SWAT Challenge was held at the Robert L. Taylor Complex where the Sarasota Millionaires hold their practices every Tuesday's and Thursday's.

When asked by founder of Brotherhood of Men Dominic Harris, who is also a police officer for the Sarasota Police Dept. if the Millionaires could help out in any way, it was a simple answer.. Yes! The Millionaires organization provided coolers filled with Gatorade for the event as well as the entire team helping and having fun with the children who participated in the challenge. The event featured speakers from both the police department and the mentoring group, as well as a mini obstacle course, free food and music. Those who participated were asked to dress in exercise clothes, and all participants had to have a waiver form signed by a parent or guardian before being able to participate. Millionaire players formed "groups" as if they were SWAT members and participated in the mini obstacle course "It was fun to break down the door, and jump over walls, etc SWAT members have to be in tip top shape and train hard like us football players" said O/L Chris Odom.

The Sarasota Millionaires this season will have three qualified quarterbacks on the team and anyone of them can be the starter on opening day. Last seasons starting QB Mario Davis is picking up where he left off at and that's continuing to learn head coach Ernest Givins system. Davis will be entering his third season with the Millionaires. The past eight regular season games, Davis started under the helm as he threw four touchdown passes, seven interceptions, and had 506 yard passing. Davis was also effective running the ball with 254 yards rushing, three touchdowns on 39 carries. Teams will definitely have to prepare for Davis due the fact he has gained the confidence and leadership skills which makes for a couple of nice ingredients to have a successful season.

Justin Breinich isn't a stranger at the quarterback position as that has been his natural position coming out of Sarasota High School. Breinich joined the team in 2008 as the back up quarterback to Michael Peterson. After spending a couple of years as backup Breinch wanted to display his talents and turn into a utility player. Playing quarterback, defensive back and wide receiver. With his time on the team Briench has thrown touchdowns, caught touchdowns, and made interceptions for the Millionaires. Briench has also been put in different positions for the team and has been a great team player through it all. Recently at practice when coach Givins mentioned that all positions were open Briench decided to go back to where he started from, back up under the helm. Justin Briench is also a great asset to the community he is a lifeguard at one of the best beaches in the nation.. Siesta Key Beach here in beautiful Sarasota, Florida.

Taurun Weathersby is a first year player to the program. Weathersby is 6'4 245 pounds that's great size for a quarterback and he is picking up coach Givins offense on the fly. The best thing about him at this point is he's excited and willing to learn. Weathersby is from Prentiss, Mississippi where attended Prentiss High School and Jackson State University. If he continues to learn and digest the offense, follows  the direction of Givins, then he to can have a good chance of being named the starter on opening day. Taurun Weathersby has the arm, size, and the dedication.

It's not a bad thing to have a quarterback controversy... stay tuned to see who will be the starter for the 2012/13 Millionaires season.

The Sarasota Millionaires had another great week of practice. The program is looking it's best ever in regards to the positive energy the new and veteran players are displaying. The Millionaires just completed it's second week of practice and had over 40 or better players at each of them. "Every guy has made the team... Look in mirror that's who will cut you. By not coming to practice, not learning the system and not being disciplined" said head coach Ernest Givins. The Millionaires are gearing up for their upcoming preseason games and that will indicate who can handle the reality of playing this game of football at this level and who cannot. Practices will continue to intensify as the team gets closer to full contact in the upcoming weeks.
